Chatham Voices is a non-partisan initiative that seeks to determine what makes Chatham special and what residents value most. From Solar to housing to how our towns special places will get protected - Decisions affecting our community and town's landscape will be made over the next decade, shaping our future, and we want to ensure that the people who live here are heard first. Otherwise, developers, utilities, investors and other outside groups will get to decide how we live and what happens to our town.

Max Cane and Dodie Gearing will be presenting their discoveries while metal-detecting in New Concord and in the Town of Canaan as well as some of the research and mapping techniques that reveal home sites and cemeteries lost to time. Artifacts like militia buttons, fancy Georgian shoe buckles and counterfeit British halfpennies give a glimpse into the daily lives of these families and the social climate in early American History.
On September 23, 2022 Dodie Gearing and Max Cane found the Lea-Van Cott Cemetery in Canaan, New York using his metal detecting device. The Pratts and Van Cotts were the families that left Canaan and eventually founded the Mormon faith.
The illustrated talk will be followed by savories and an opportunity to meet and question the speakers.
Max Cane holds a Master’s Degree in Geology/Earth Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He is the president of Pro-Tec Recycling and consultant in Troy, New York
Dodie (Doris) Gearing holds a Master’s Degree in Advanced Classroom Teaching and History from the State University of New York at Albany.
